senior travel tips Senior Travel Tips

Are you a senior getting ready to go on a much deserved vacation? Whether you are cruising the Caribbean, playing your best hand in Vegas, or going on a safari in South Africa, knowing the four P’s of senior travel is essential to every senior trip:

Pre-Planning

Leave spur of the moment and impulsive traveling to the younger generation. Seniors should pre-plan all lengthy travel.

-Learn about the climate, language and culture of your chosen destination.

-Find out where the local medical facilities are located.

-Don’t forget to purchase travel insurance; it’s better to be safe than sorry.

-If you are disabled and need oxygen, wheelchair or guide-dog accommodations, make them in advance, with both the airline and the hotel in which you are staying. (more…)

What’s In Your Emergency Car Kit?

Deborah Leader, RN, BSN, PH - August 1, 2009

Recently, an elderly couple nearly died after having car trouble on their way home to Helendale, California. In attempt to find an alternative route after facing a road closure, the couple was found by in California’s San Bernardino county desert collapsed from dehydration.

The couple had tried to navigate their way down a nearby dirt road, and after their car had become stuck, they started walking. After looking for help (for only a short time), the man  collapsed from dehydration, and the woman continued to search for help, but soon fell down 35-foot embankment into a riverbed. Fortunately, they were both rescued much later after someone had come across the husband, but sadly this disaster could have been prevented.

If you are planning to take a road trip this summer, don’t forget to pack an emergency kit for your car. Should you buy one from the store? Forget about it! You can make your own for a fraction of the cost. Here’s what you’ll need: (more…)

Why should I have a wallet medication list?

Alex Bettencourt - July 16, 2009

How many of us keep a tiny list of our medical information in our wallet?  We carry around our health insurance, credit and reward cards. Why don’t we carry a small slip of paper that could save our life?

A wallet list containing your medical information is essential because it could prevent a disaster in the emergency room. If you have to be treated for something immediately it’s important for doctors to know your current medications, blood type, allergies, emergency contacts and more.

If you want to print out a sample of a medical emergency card, see ours below! (more…)

A Peek Inside Our Virtual Organization

Pamela Swingley - July 4, 2009

Bootstrapped and Virtual

The legendary stories of tech companies that have succeeded from humble beginnings provide hope to optimistic bootstrapped start ups, like RememberItNow!

Humble is a good description of RememberItNow! today. We’ve taken full advantage of low-cost or free Web 2.0 technologies to quickly, and inexpensively build our business.

For starters, our organization is almost entirely virtual. “Headquarters” is a home office loft in Orinda, Ca. The rest of our team is scattered throughout the United States, Asia, and South America.

View a Google Map of the  RememberItNow! Team.

Having a virtual company allows us to work with the most talented people, wherever they live. We haven’t had the distraction of finding and moving to an office, and we don’t have to worry about the overhead.

Most of our employees are contractors. And, while I love the fact that we don’t have to worry about paying salaries right now, there are definitely times I wish I had their undivided attention. Even in this recessionary environment they stay very busy. We often have online meetings after 9:00 pm. We may be a small start up, but our business runs 24×7.

How We Do It

We stay connected through instant messaging. Either Yahoo! Messenger or Google Talk. Skype takes care of the rare international call. FreeConferenceCall.com works fine for team meetings in the US.

Google Docs has nearly replaced MS Office for many of us. Collaboration is painless, and it eliminates the need to send emails and track revisions.

The core team at RememberItNow! has worked together before. Our mutual respect and trust for each other has helped us build great software, ahead of schedule.

When we do need to hire extra help, we look online to find the best talent our budget allows.

Twitter and LinkedIn are two great social networks where you can ask for referrals. We’ve used eLance to find writers and quality assurance folks. Be sure to check ratings and see work samples. The quality can be hit and miss.

CrowdSPRING is an amazing resource to find talented graphic artists. You post your project and designers work on spec. You’ll get loads of ideas and connect with a designer that shares your vision. If you need help with your blog, we’ve found the quality of writers on the ProBlogger Job Board to be a notch above the rest.

We’re not entirely virtual. When it came time to hire a marketing assistant I wanted someone local, that would work directly with me.  You can only IM so much and I was getting lonely.

I quickly learned that CraigsList has a wide following, be prepared to review hundreds of resumes. If you need administrative help, try your local college. It’s where I found Alex, who takes care of this blog, and a million other things.

Job prospects for this year’s college graduates are poor. You’ll have your pick of top students who will contribute now, grow along with your company, and provide a testament to your humble start up story.

Embrace Being Green!

Alex Bettencourt - June 30, 2009

When I say we love being green, I don’t mean being green with envy; I’m talking about being environmentally green. RememberItNow! embraces green living in a million ways and wants you to start too if you haven’t already. Do you think it’s a coincidence our logo is green? Hmmm… I think not.

Anyway, here are a few reasons why and how we embrace being green.

1. We Save Trees!

Most importantly RememberItNow! allows you to save paper and store your notes online. No more scribbling medication instructions on a million different papers. They only get scattered around the house all over again. This is the same for all your contacts and health information. Now you can centralize all your medication information online and stop worrying about losing that special post-it.

We hardly ever use paper (maybe a napkin for lunch because I am a messy eater). We communicate via email, phone, and share documents through Google docs.

2. We will not send you junk mail!

The average American receives 41lbs or junk mail per year! We like to go paperless (I know I already mentioned saving trees before, but we will never send you any catalog or any type of mail convincing you to try more of our services). What you see is what you get with RememberItNow!

The only mail we receive are physical supplies, and most of our vendors are paid electronically through PayPal or direct deposit. It really is pointless to send mail when you can use the web.

3. We like to save gas.

We are really strong advocates of fitness and exercise. Walking somewhere instead of driving is a great way to prevent Cardiovascular disease and take control of your overall health. You can easily add your fitness routine into your RememberItNow! Wellness journal too.  We strongly encourage you to set those weight goals, and achieve them by exercise.

We especially practice what we preach with this because we have a virtual team.  There is no commuting (except for me, but only 2x a week :), and when we do meet, it’s once in a blue moon. We are fans of conference calls and web conferences too!

4. We encourage you to save electricity.

A while ago, we advised some terrific places to visit with a loved one in the article, “Cool Summer Places to Visit for You and Your Patient”. If you want to cut electrical costs down and enjoy yourself at the same time, follow this advice! Turn the AC off and head out to your local library, check out a bookstore, visit a museum, sip some cool tea at a cafe, and just enjoy yourself. Take advantage of public places and when you head out the door make sure to switch everything off (you will help even more if you unplug everything as well).

We definately take advantage of outside living here in Northern California. Pam loves to take her dog Domino out for hikes and long walks. And on the weekends, you will never see her in her car-only her beloved bike. People call me crazy for running everywhere, but that’s what you get with someone with too much energy and a former cross-country athlete in college.

We all feel very fortunate  to live in a beautiful state and hope you take advantage of Mother Nature where you are too.  Maybe a bike ride can be your next choice rather than a car ride.  If we all embrace green living maybe we can make our Earth happy.

The Dangers of Dehydration in Elderly Patients

Deborah Leader, RN, BSN, PH - June 1, 2009

Refreshing WaterPhysiologic changes in the body related to the aging process make elderly people especially prone to dehydration. This is due, in part because the aging brain isn’t able to effectively determine how much water the body needs. Additionally, with age, an elderly person’s thirst response diminishes, which means he or she may not recognize the need to drink more. (more…)

The Truth About Sun Protection

Deborah Leader, RN, BSN, PH - May 20, 2009

Fun in the sun

Did you grow up with the tan of Apollo, worshiping the sun, never concerning yourself with that little thing called “sunscreen”?  Alas, if we only knew then what we know now about the dangers of the sun’s harmful, ultra violet (UV) rays.

The International Dermal Institute recommends the daily use of sunscreen, not just in the summer sun, but even on cold or cloudy days. Why? Because wearing sunscreen, regardless of skin type, protects you from the damaging effects of the sun while helping to prevent premature aging and your risk of skin cancer. (more…)
